Upset Prevention & Recovery Training

Loss of Control — Inflight (LOC-I) is the leading cause of fatal accidents in general aviation. It is a top priority of the FAA, and it is a top priority of Benz Aviation. Our UPRT program exists to directly address that statistic by equipping pilots with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to prevent, recognize, and recover from any recoverable LOC-I scenario.
The majority of LOC-I accidents trace back to a common set of deficiencies: inadequate stall and spin awareness, poor all-attitude recovery technique, and degraded decision-making under stress. The solution is not more hours in the pattern — it is targeted, structured training that puts pilots in those situations under controlled conditions and builds genuine competency. Quick and effective recovery from an upset is an achievable skill, and it requires far less time than most pilots expect.
At Benz Aviation, our UPRT curriculum follows a proven instructional model grounded in the FAA's Airplane Upset Recovery Training Aid (AURTA) and applicable Advisory Circulars. Every course includes comprehensive ground instruction covering advanced aerodynamics, energy management, and the expanded flight envelope — because understanding why an upset happens is inseparable from knowing how to recover from it. All UPRT training is conducted in the Super Decathlon, an aerobatic-certified aircraft ideally suited for this type of instruction.

UPRT Basic Course
The Basic Course is designed for pilots at any experience level who want to build a strong foundation in upset prevention and recovery. The course includes a comprehensive ground school lecture and three flights, each with dedicated pre- and post-flight briefings. It is typically completed over two days.
Upon completion, students will have a solid working understanding of all-attitude recovery technique, stall and spin aerodynamics, and the decision-making framework required in an upset scenario. It is worth noting that while the Basic Course establishes the core skill set, research and experience have consistently shown that four or more flights are needed to fully develop and retain the complete range of skills taught. Pilots looking for that deeper level of proficiency are encouraged to consider the Advanced Course.

UPRT Advanced Course
The Advanced Course is built for pilots who are committed to developing a level of proficiency that goes well beyond initial exposure. It includes comprehensive ground instruction and five flights, each with pre- and post-flight briefings, giving students the repetition and progressive challenge needed to move from awareness to ingrained, reliable skill.
Early flights focus on foundational recognition and recovery technique. As the course progresses, scenarios become more dynamic, combining attitude, energy state, and a strong emphasis on stall spin awareness. By the later flights, students are not thinking through their recoveries — they are executing them. That transition from conscious technique to automatic response is the defining goal of the Advanced Course, and it is what separates a pilot who has been exposed to UPRT from one who is genuinely prepared.
